The original setting for the Olivier award-winning production of children’s classic The Railway Children was the decommissioned Eurostar terminal at Waterloo Station. When this meanwhile use for the station ended, the production company looked to find a new home, ideally with a railway connection. We were approached by developers Argent to help with the delivery of a temporary performance space under canvas tents at the back of Kings Cross station, on a site which will soon become the UK headquarters of tech giants Google. The 994-seat theatre mirrors the traverse arrangement of the Waterloo production, with a train track installed down the middle of the tent, bridged with movable stage platforms, and able to accommodate the entrance of a steam train into the space at the climax of the piece.
