The ‘Atomik scale’ stretches from mega-urban projects right through to far more intimate objects. This project, won in an open call from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is at the intimate end of the scale. The brief was to design and deliver a piece of outdoor furniture for the London Pleasure Gardens at Pontoon Docks. Our see-saw is for companions who, with a foot on the ground, can lean back and rock the bench, and is formed from a stack of flat plywood boomerangs, each rotated a single degree and fixed together. The result is a gently shifting surface, a comfy place somewhere on the way to a rest, or a destination in its own right.
