City Nomads is an ongoing project, founded by us with the British Council in 2015, which invites a new generation of Kazakhstani creatives to investigate their country’s nomadic heritage, and to explore the identity of modern-day ‘city nomads’. The first iteration of the project was an exhibition at the British Council in London in 2016 showcasing the work of a group of young Kazakhstani designers. We curated and designed the exhibition, which covered fashion, product design, graphic design, publishing, film and architecture. A second edition of City Nomads in 2017 commissioned designers and artists to create six new objects which embodied the idea of a city nomad, and the cultural codes that might inform it. The exhibition formed part of the Cultural Expo held in parallel with the Astana Expo 2017, and was first exhibited at the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan before touring the country the following year.
